Seal of Rye
Historical Background
A deed conveying property in Merstret in Rye from John and Alice Torel to Peter and Denise Hegsthone. There are two seals attached, both in green wax. The smaller is of John Torel and shows a ship with one mast. The larger is the first seal of Rye, which has been attached for better evidence and security. Its depiction of a ship emphasises the town’s reliance on the sea and its status as a member of the Cinque Ports.
