Map in pen on paper with backing (facsimile of an original in England).
The French Wars of Religion had started with a revolt by Protestants and ended with one by members of the Catholic League. This copy of an English map depicts the siege of the town of Gournay-en-Bray by royal troops under the command of Marshal Gontaut-Biron and supported by the English forces of the Count of Essex. The town had been held since September 1589 by members of the Catholic League, who did not accept Henry the Fourth, who was still a Protestant at that time, as king of France.
